When Should You Send Out Wedding Invitations?

When are you supposed to send wedding invitations?

It’s a question we get asked a lot. In fact, it’s probably the question that I get asked most often when I meet couples.

My answer is pretty straightforward: send out invitations about 6 weeks to 4 months before your wedding. If guests will be traveling from out-of-town to your wedding, then give them a little more time to plan, and send your wedding invitations 4-6 months in advance. Especially if you haven’t sent out save the dates for your wedding.

Give yourself a week or so after your invitations arrive to assemble, address, stamp and seal them.

Wedding Planning: How to Order Wedding Invitations

Buying wedding invitations can be confusing and time-consuming, but it doesn’t have to be. Here’s a simple guide from to ordering your wedding invitations:

  1. Think about what style and type of invitation you want.
  2. Count up your guest list, and this will help you figure out how many invitations you’ll need.
  3. Determine your wedding stationery budget.
  4. Find a vendor or a design (or both) that you like.
  5. Agree on what you want to say on your invitations.
  6. Order your invitations about 2-4 weeks before you intend to send them!

  1. Think about what style and type of invitation you want.
  2. Check out blogs, inspiration boards, and magazines to get a sense of what you like. There are so many options out there (flat printing, special shapes, pocket folds, letterpress, thermography, print-your-own, online-only) that you probably want to generally decide how much it costs.

    Here’s our guide to different types of printing normally used for wedding invitations.

    You may decide to go with doing it yourself, or having a friend design them for you. This route can be the most cost-effective but also includes a lot of time and effort in terms of getting supplies, deciding on a design, and figuring out how to print your invitations.

    Completely custom designs are usually the most expensive and often require more time to discuss and create a design. But if you have your heart set on them, go for it!

  3. Count up your guest list, and this will help you figure out how many invitations you’ll need.
  4. In general, anywhere from 1/4 to 1/3 of your guests may not be able to attend. And couples or families need only one invitation so you save a little on the per-person cost (yay, finally some savings!). Be sure to order about 10-20 additional invitations and envelopes in case of mistakes or additional guests.

    Guest response rates are generally lower for destination weddings, or weddings during holiday weekends such as Memorial Day and Labor Day.

  5. Determine your wedding stationery budget.
  6. Usually this is about 2-5% of your total wedding budget, and should include all paper products and postage. Your invitations will probably be about 2/3 of total cost, and you may want to figure out how much you’re planning to spend on a per-person basis. Matching ceremony programs, reception menus, and place cards or escort cards help tie together your theme for your wedding day as well.

  7. Find a wedding stationery site or a design (or both) that you like and trust.
  8. We’re obviously biased, but we like the online route for purchasing wedding invitations. You get the ease and convenience of buying online, plus the option to order samples if you’d like to see and feel the invitations for yourself. There’s no correct way to choose which company you like, but if you don’t see a design that you must have, then sometimes it’s easier to find a company you trust, and choose from their designs.

  9. Agree on what you want to say on your invitations.
  10. This is harder than it sounds. You’ll need the basics, like the location and date, and your names of course. Then there are parents’ names and how to word everything.  You’ll need a respond-by date, reception entrée options if appropriate, and information for directions and accomodations cards.

Approving the proof, printing your custom wedding stationery, and receiving the order may take some time, so build that into your planning process as well.

We’re specifically looking for designers who have experience in print design – professional artists and designers who may be looking to supplement their current jobs with some creative, fun design work. Previous experience designing stationery is not required but is helpful.

Coming Soon!

Coming soon… wedding invitations for the millions of almost-marrieds out there who aren’t DIY brides or craft-y. (Or, at least, who don’t want to trouble their friends, family, coworkers, pet turtles, and random strangers with favors that cannot be repaid for the “most important day” of their lives.) We don’t believe in the hype of traditional wedding vendors, but we do believe that weddings are personal, significant celebrations.

We’ll start with offering wedding invitations and other wedding stationery and may expand beyond that. Exactly how, we’re still not sure. marrymoment is a work-in-progress, just like pretty much everything in life, so come along, stay for the ride, and let us know what you’re missing in your wedding planning process!
